We start with a group of female beings who, whilst not gods, are pivotal to the whole of norse mythology and human life. The Norns.
They control the destinies of gods and humans. They are three sisters, Urd, Verdandi and Skuld. You will see similarities across other mythology and story, the Moirai in Greek mythology, the three witches in Macbeth, for example.
Urd represents what has past. Verdandi represents the present. Skuld represents what will happen in the future.
They reside at the roots of Yggdrasil, the world tree. They tend to it and nurture it.
The are in fact many Norns, but these three are the most important and most referred to. There is no evidence that they were ever worshipped. But it is believed that Vikings thought they may be able to ask the Norns to change their fate. However, in Norse view, fate could not be influenced or changed.
