Story

The rune Tiwaz translates as Tyr, Tyr being the god of war and justice. The story of the god Tyr is one of the more magnificent stories from Norse mythology. The great wolf Fenrir, son of Loki, was wreaking havoc across the realms. He had to be stopped. A plan was hatched and the dwarves, known for their expert craftsmanship were tasked with creating an unbreakable bind. They made the chain, Gleipnir. Fenrir was curious about the chain as it was so light and supple. He suspected trickery and so challenged someone to put their hand in his mouth in case he was tricked and couldn’t break free. Knowing that this would mean losing an arm, only the god Tyr was brave enough. So he stepped forward and placed his arm in the mouth of Fenrir. Sure enough, the bind couldn’t be broken and Fenrir bit Tyr’s arm clean off.

Meaning

When presented with Tiwaz in your reading, know that this is a great sign of bravery and a bid to seek justice. This is a very masculine energy rune, as can be understood from the connection to Tyr, but also the symbol itself. And so, this rune is also connected to masculine traits like leadership and discipline. If this appears to you, it could be guiding you on a justice that you seek, or it could be showing you that now is the time to be brave and step forward.

Reversed Meaning

If you choose to acknowledge reversed meanings in your reading, then Tiwaz will depend on the reading. If you are seeking guidance on a matter of justice, this could mean that you are not right, or it is the wrong time to push for justice. So be careful. But if your reading is not connected to a matter of justice, it speaks of your lacking in the masculine traits or bravery. It is not saying you do not have them, simply, you are in need of dealing with them and bringing them out.
